Volunteer at the Cathedral

The Cathedral would not be able to fulfil its mission without the dedicated support of over 100 volunteers who give generously of their time in so many ways. Within the Cathedral itself, there are opportunities to be involved in the support of the liturgy by becoming an Altar Server, a reader, or a member of one of our music groups; to help keep our Cathedral beautiful by joining the Flower Group, the Embroidery Group or the Cathedral Cleaners; to take part in our mission of welcome by becoming a steward or a guide. And of course there are many opportunities to volunteer in the Narthex.

Training is provided where necessary and all volunteers are required to undergo a CRB check as many will come into contact with young people or vulnerable adults. For further information on our Volunteer Programme, please read our Volunteer Action Plan

Current Volunteering Oportunities

There are many ways to get involved and to give of your time and talents in the Cathedral and Narthex. Volunteering is open to all, irrespective of faith or background. See below for a list of current volunteering oportunites at the Cathedral. If you are interested in any of these positions please contact us using the details shown opposite.

Guides Needed!

Can you spare 1½ hours a month?

Can you smile and say “hello”?

Can you talk to people confidently?

If you can answer “yes” to these three simple questions, then you are a guide! Or you could be if you want.

Guides are required throughout the summer period to meet, greet and help the many visitors to our Cathedral.

With the support of pre-prepared notes, a little training and assistance from experienced guides you can be the face of the Cathedral helping people to understand our building, our culture and, if asked, our faith.

Refectory

The Refectory at the Narthex is a lovely spot for visitors to relax and unwind over morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea. It is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10.30 – 4pm. Under the guidance of Catering Manager, Sara Blount, volunteers help with service and general kitchen assistance. Full training is provided and there is an opportunity to learn more about the catering and hospitality industry. It is also a great way to meet staff, other volunteers and members of the public.

Shop

Ever wanted to work in a shop? The Cathedral shop stocks a wonderful range of cards, gifts and fair trade items. It is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10.30 – 4pm and after Mass on Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers are needed to help serve customers and other retail duties. Full training is given by Shop Manager, Mrs Beryl Stock. Morning shifts are from 10.30 – 1pm and afternoon from 1 – 4pm.

Cathedral Garden

We are looking for volunteers to support the garden for the coming season. The Memorial Rose bed needs a caring volunteer to deadhead and feed the roses in season and to keep the bed weed-free. If you have an interest in roses, or would like to learn how to care for them, why not get in touch. An hour a week would probably be enough! Similarly, our large beds also need a kind hand to maintain them. This would involve light gardening tasks such as dead-heading the flowers, weeding and keeping the bed looking attractive throughout the growing season. Again, an hour a week would make a tremendous difference. We work on Fridays between 9am and 4pm, and refreshments are always on hand! Tools and gardening gloves are provided as well as gardening knowhow, if needed. Do come and join us.

Library

Interested in books? The Duckett Library is looking for new volunteers to help with all aspects of library life. Volunteers meet on a Tuesday and Thursday from 10.30 – 1pm. Guidance is given by Head Librarian, Peter Thorn and his dedicated team of volunteers.

Tower Tour Guides

Do you have a head for heights? Are you fairly fit? Would you like to see the best view of Norwich and share it with others? Tower Tour Guides are needed from April to September on a Saturday afternoon at 1.30pm and 2.30pm and during the week from time-to-time. Full training is given by Tower Tour Guide, Nodge Carnegie for weekend tours and by Jo Anderton, Education Officer, for bespoke events. It’s a wonderful experience and a unique opportunity to see Norwich from a different angle!

Events and Stewarding

Do you have a few hours to spare from time to time. Would you enjoy serving refreshments at events? Would you like to Steward at concerts? If so, then do come and join a vibrant team of helpers and experience a wide range of activities in both the Narthex and Cathedral.
