The First Holy Communion and Confirmation families gathered together for a joyous thanksgiving mass and celebration on Sunday 1st July 2018.
The theme of the mass was “walking in solidarity with refugees” – in response to Pope Francis’ call and CAFOD’s “share the journey” campaign. In true “live simply” style, the mass featured an electronic mass booklet for parishioners to download from the cathedral website – to save on paper and printing. This also allowed the group to introduce some newer hymns for the mass – with music provided by the Couples for Christ (CFC) music ministry.
After the mass, the children took part in a “Round the World” race – finding and retracing the footprints of the 12 stages of CAFOD’s journey around the world – to raise awareness of the plight of refugees around the world.
It was a fast paced race with teams competing to be the first to collect and assemble all twelve stages of the CAFOD journey. The winning led by Sam Graham raced to the finish and just pipped the other teams to the finish.
The teams then assembled all the footprints down the nave of the cathedral. The race capsover 3 months of walking by the parish – clocking over 1,934 miles and the participants learnt more about the experiences of refugees and communities all over the world in the process.
As young Thomas put it, “It was awesome!”. The race was followed by a party in the Narthex, with the winning team cutting the big celebration cake. A good time was had by all.
