It is a cause of much rejoicing that the formal Canonisation of Blessed Oscar Romero will take place in Rome on 14/15th October. As Archbishop of San Salvador in the late 1970’s he became the leader of the Church in his native land. He also became a man of the poor, their advocate when they had no other voice to demand justice for them, and was murdered by an agent of the ruling Junta on 24th March 1980, whilst saying Mass.
Romero was afraid that preaching the Gospel and speaking truth to power literally placed him in the firing line. But with enormous courage he suffered and gave his life on behalf of the poor. He is a saint of our times, a powerful example to us all and patron of the Justice and Peace Group at St John’s Cathedral – Deo Gratias.
