When a fire broke out on the roundabout near the Cathedral today (9 May 2024), staff and volunteers ran to the rescue with fire extinguishers from the Cathedral campus. The team assisted the police officer attending the fire, as the flames took hold and leapt up the tree. Whilst waiting for the fire and rescue service, four fire extinguishers were used by the team to stop the spread of the fire and put the flames out. The fire and rescue service then ensured there was no further risk to the public.

Charley Purves, Cathedral Manager (pictured below) commented, “on being made aware of the incident, our staff and volunteers put their fire warden training into practice to assist the police and fire service. It was a shocking sight to see the flames rising up, but the team worked so well and so quickly, it luckily turned out to be a minor incident.”

The team are now assisting the police with their enquiries and replacing the used fire extinguishers.
